Speakers Announced for Australia’s first ever Allergy and Free From Show

An impressive line-up of acclaimed medical professionals and industry experts are headlining Australia’s first ever Allergy Show & Free From Show, July 12 – 14. The two conveniently co-located events held at the Melbourne Convention Centre & Exhibition Centre will play host to a series of seminars from representatives from the Allergy & Anaphylaxis Australia (A&AA), Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH), Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI), Australian Institute of Food Science and Technology (AIFST), IBS Research at Monash University and more.

Speakers will cover gut health, food intolerances, living with coeliac disease, plant-based nutrition, creating a healthier home, managing eczema, and information concerning all things allergy. The educational talks will last 30 minutes and will be followed by crowd questions.

ALLERGY SHOW LEARING CENTRE PROGRAM

Respected Australian professionals will unite to present research, information and tips on common allergies in the Allergy Learning Centre. Topics include: the current challenges in allergen labelling and how manufacturers and consumers can help increase food safety, by Maria Said (CEO, A&AA); food allergen labelling legislation from Fiona Fleming (Managing Director, AIFST); why Australia has become the allergy capital of the world and the treatments that are being researched by Dr Jennifer Koplin (Allergic Disease Epidemiologist, MCRI).

Ms Vicki McWilliam (Paediatric Allergy Dietitian and RCH Researcher) will discuss managing multiple food allergies; Dr Dean Tey (RCH Consultant Paediatric Allergist & Immunologist) will address why allergic disease is a big issue in Australia now, when it was not 30 years ago, how a food allergy is diagnosed and treated, and whether it can be prevented.

There will be invaluable insights for parents as Dr Wendy Norton (GP, Allergy Department, Royal Melbourne Hospital) discusses what she has learned in her 15 years managing her family’s multiple food allergies. Sandra Vale (National Allergy Strategy Coordinator), will discuss a new campaign “Nip Allergies in the Bub” – an allergy prevention project to improve eczema care and food allergy rates in babies.

RCH Allergist and Immunologist Dr Mark Taranto will tackle the big questions surrounding food allergy: how do I get an allergy diagnosis, what are the limitations around testing and what is the likelihood my child will have a food allergy? Helen Czech (Clinical Research Nurse at MCRI), will cover the realm of Oral Food Challenges (OFC), and explain why they are the gold standard for food allergy diagnosis.

When Thunderstorm Asthma rocked Victorians in 2016, it raised more question than answers. Jayde Cesarec (Health & Projects Partnership, Asthma Australia), will shine a light on the epidemic, who is at risk, how to respond and the link between asthma and hay fever. Dr Marnie Robinson, RCH Paediatric Allergist & Immunologist will talk all things allergic rhinitis (commonly known as hay fever) along with coping strategies.

FREE FROM SHOW HEALTH AND WELLNESS LEARNING CENTRE

Dr Brooke Harcourt (Specialist Paediatric and Maternal Dietitian, Family Dietetics) will provide simple and delicious tips and recipes. Annabel Mackenzie (Accredited Practicing Dietitian, AM Nutrition) invites trade representatives to her discussion about cross contamination in the kitchen and how to avoid it.

What is eczema? Is it genetic? Can it be cured? Dr Tim Brettig from the RCH’s Department of Allergy & Immunology, has the answers. Bronwyn Bennett (Director of Creating Healthy Spaces Building Biology Services) will share research-backed ways to reduce toxins and chemicals in the home for healthier living.

With so many plant-based dairy products on the market, it can be hard to choose the right dairy-free replacement and no – soy is not always the answer! Frances Walker, “The Food Intolerance Dietitian” explains why.

Research indicates 50-80% of people get an improvement on the low FODMAP Diet. But what if you’re one of the 20-50% that don’t? Whether FODMAPs or food chemicals, Joanna Baker (Accredited Practicing Dietitian at Everyday Nutrition), will discuss possible IBS triggers.

Professor Mimi Tang (RCH Paediatric Immunologist; MCRI Group Leader of Allergy and Immune Disorders Research; and Paediatrics Professor at University of Melbourne) will discuss the role of the gut microbiota in allergic disease, and share some exciting new research into treating peanut allergies.

General Medical Practitioner Dr Malcolm Mackay will share his expertise in plant-based nutrition, discussing how the right diet can restore gut health, boost long term health, and the effect this may have on allergy and autoimmune disease.

For anyone who has experienced eczema, ulcers, hay fever and nausea as a result of food chemical sensitivities, the RPAH Elimination Diet could be the solution. Zoe Nicholson, (Accredited Practising Dietitian and Nutritionist, Love What You Eat Consulting), explains why.

After 18 years of living with coeliac disease, Olivia Jackson knows firsthand the 5 steps you need to take once diagnosed with gluten intolerance. Jackson (Owner and Publisher, yum. Gluten Free) will share practical advice on living with a coeliac diagnosis.
